CONTENT WARNING: RACIAL SLUR
This afternoon, Gordon College’s Afro Hamwe released a statement on Instagram in response to an overtly racist attack that occurred in one of the resident halls. They began the post with “WE NEED YOUR HELP! Racism at Gordon College is very present and cannot continue to be ignored by the Gordon College Administration, Residence Life staff, and Faculty.”
This is the copy of the post.
“In another residence hall, one of the students’ shirts was defaced and found in the laundry room with the writing ‘F**k N***ers’ on it in black sharpie. The individual responsible for this unacceptable, racist, white supremacist behavior left the shirt on a table displaying it for everyone to see. This incident alongside many others, is a true representation of the injustices and lack of cultural competency that continues to be ignored. Black students on campus do not feel safe. Black students continue to go through extremely traumatizing experiences, and pain that has been inflicted upon us repeatedly by students on the Gordon College campus which continues to be ignored by the college’s administration.
We’re asking that you guys share this and let the world know what is happening on our campus. We are calling upon the press to be an external source of pressure to hold Gordon college accountable for their actions in continuously perpetuating acts of racism and injustice on our campus. This comes as a result of the lack of a proper response from the college in handling these acts in the past.”
There will be a meeting held outside of Frost at 3 p.m. today. This is a developing story, and the Tartan will continue to update as it unfolds.
Gordon College Police have confirmed that an investigation into the hate crime has begun, and requests that anybody with any information surrounding the case contact Glenn Deckert directly at Glenn.Deckert@gordon.edu, or contact police@gordon.edu.
